Annual beach permits are available for purchase for $50 (AB residents) and $75 (non-residents) at the Town Hall during regular business hours and beginning Oct 5th, at the Fire Department on the weekends. AB residents/property owners aged 65 and older may receive one free permit for a four-wheel drive vehicle registered in their name. A valid drivers license and registration card for a four-wheel drive vehicle must be presented at time of purchase. ATV’s are not allowed to drive on the beach at any time. Beach driving is permitted from October 1st through March 15th from dawn to dusk. No beach driving is allowed on the beach without an official Town of Atlantic Beach beach driving permit.
Payment Methods: Town Hall accepts payment by cash, check, money order, and credit cards. The Fire Department, as a courtesy, has volunteered to issue the beach driving permits over the weekends but they can only accept checks and money orders. NEW for 2019: Permits may be purchased online. Online purchases will be reviewed the next business day with qualifying permits to be mailed and non-qualifying permit purchases to be issued a refund to the credit card used. Online purchases will require a copy of your vehicle registration and drivers license to be uploaded with payment.
Fee Exceptions: (processed only at Town Hall or online)
*Handicapped persons of any age (whether they are Atlantic Beach residents / taxpayers or not) are eligible for one free permit. Handicapped persons in addition to providing copies of vehicle registration and drivers license must also provide a copy of their handicap placard and DMV registration card for their placard. The four-wheel drive vehicle which is to be permitted must be registered to the handicapped person.
*Purple Heart Recipients are eligible for one free permit and must provide proof that they have been awarded the decoration. The following is accepted as proof: Defense Department Form 214, discharge papers, military personnel records, orders or award certificates. These articles of proof are the same as allowed by the VA. The four-wheel drive vehicle which is to be permitted must be registered to the Purple Heart Recipient.
*Commercial fishermen are eligible for one free PASS and must provide a copy of the front and back of the commercial fishing license. The four-wheel drive vehicle which is to be permitted must be registered to the Commercial fisherman. This pass is not the beach driving permit, but will allow free access to the beach strand while actively commercial fishing.
Placement of Permit Decals: The permit decal must be permanently affixed and displayed on the windshield on the driver’s side of the vehicle to which it is issued. All decals from previous years must be removed.
Beach Entry/Exit: Authorized beach access points for vehicular driving are located at Henderson Blvd (primary) and Raleigh Avenue.
Certain sections of the beach may be closed from time to time due to erosion concerns, in order to protect endangered and/or threatened sea turtle and bird nests, beach nourishment projects, and/or to provide for general protection of public health, safety, and welfare. Closed sections will be posted and roped, and beach drivers must avoid these areas entirely.
