Since the Fall of 2015, Town staff has been reviewing the structure of our Unified Development Ordinance (UDO) in how it is somewhat disjointed and unwieldy to administer and process. For example, some regulations are actually placed in the list of definitions of terms. There have also been several changes in the state land use regulations that affect local planning issues. To that effect, we brought in the firm of CodeWright from Durham, NC to assist us in revising the format and updating certain policies for legislative compliance (like sign ordinances). This effort is not an attempt to rewrite provisions within the UDO, but to reformat it so it is easier to understand and administer, and refresh out-of-date policies as required by the state. CodeWright has a good track record of assisting coastal communities, and is also helping the Town of Beaufort, NC update their UDO.
